The News, Eats & Events Shaping Western New York

Buffalo’s fall never seems to last long, so a free afternoon is reason enough to head for a Western New York orchard.

Apple picking offers a break from busy weekends, with the bonus of fruit to take home for pies, caramel apples or weekday lunches.

At Becker Farms in Gasport, you can browse the farm market after picking and make time for warm cider doughnuts.

For another seasonal stop, Mayer Bros. Cider Mill is a longtime favorite where cider tastes just as good cold after a walk as it does warm on a chilly evening.

Keep the outing simple with a stroll through Forest Lawn, or head toward Clarence for pumpkins and family fun at The Great Pumpkin Farm.

There’s no need to fit everything into one weekend.

Check seasonal hours before you go, then leave room to enjoy the changing leaves at your own pace.

Buffalo-area families can take Halloween indoors when Galleria of Treats returns to Walden Galleria on October 29.

Trick-or-treating runs from 2 to 8 p.m., starting on the mall’s lower level outside Urban Outfitters.

Children can show off their costumes and collect treats from tables hosted by local businesses and community organizations.

For families keeping an eye on Western New York’s fall weather, the indoor route means no rain-soaked costumes or chilly neighborhood walk.

It also gives relatives of different ages an easier way to join the fun.

Advance tickets are $3 per person, rising to $5 on the day of the event.

Proceeds benefit Gold Together, an American Cancer Society initiative supporting cancer research and advocacy.

With six hours to stop by, families can fit a little Halloween fun around the rest of their day.

For Buffalo families juggling work and transportation, a missed vaccination can put a child’s school attendance at risk.

University at Buffalo M-VAX brings school-required vaccines closer through mobile clinics at schools and community sites across Western New York.

UB’s School of Nursing and Buffalo Public Schools run the program to ease long waits and transportation hurdles.

A $167,000 grant is supporting its expansion into libraries, recreation centers, churches and other gathering places.

At its first clinic, at Lafayette School, 90 children received 192 vaccines.

Fewer Erie County providers now participate in the federally funded Vaccines for Children program, adding to concerns about access.

M-VAX aims to reach 1,500 children and cut vaccination-related school exclusions to 5% by September 2027.

Nursing students and community partners help deliver care, with a straightforward goal: keeping more children healthy and in class.
