Visit Buffalo Announces New Effort to "Gain James Beard Awards® Nods" for Buffalo and Erie County |
Giving Recognition to Buffalo's Top Chefs and Bakers |

The Buffalo food scene is getting a louder introduction to the James Beard Awards conversation.
A local committee assembled by Visit Buffalo has put forward nine chefs, bakers and businesses for award consideration, reflecting the range of talent across Buffalo and Erie County.
That is a meaningful show of support for independent kitchens, where reputations are built one service, pastry and plate at a time.
These are local recommendations, not official James Beard nominations, a distinction worth keeping clear as the awards process moves forward.
For the Best Chef: New York State category, the committee selected Bruce Wieszala of Beacon Grille, Jennifer Boye of Moriarty Meats & Cafe, and Ryan Fernandez of Southern Junction.
The emerging chef award recommendations recognize Manny Ocasio of Mira and Darian Bryan of Bratts Hill and Reserve.
It is an especially exciting category for a city that benefits when promising cooks find room to grow.
Baking and dessert also have a strong showing, with Jenn Batt of Quokka Sweets and Gina Ocasio of Mira among those selected.
The committee also chose Kevin and Melissa Gardner of Five Points Bakery, along with Colleen Stillwell of Butter Block.
Recognition is never guaranteed, but the recommendations make a case for looking beyond Buffalo’s best-known food traditions.
The city’s culinary appeal also lives in its bakeries, neighborhood dining rooms and chefs willing to build something distinctly their own.
For residents, the list offers a reason to revisit a favorite counter or try a restaurant they have been meaning to explore.
For the people behind those businesses, it offers a welcome moment of visibility in a demanding industry.
Visit Buffalo’s committee brought together local food writers, culinary observers and a food scholar to identify candidates.
Its choices are a reminder that national attention often begins with people close to the work noticing what makes it special.
If that attention grows, Buffalo’s independent food scene stands to gain alongside the individual honorees. |
