Western New York florist spreading kindness with nationwide initiative |
Maureen’s Wholesale Flower Market brought smiles to Buffalo streets with 200 bouquets as part of 'Petal It Forward,' spreading kindness and encouraging generosity. |

Petal It Forward gave Buffalo commuters a welcome interruption Wednesday morning: a free bouquet and a reason to brighten someone else’s day.
The flower giveaway turned an ordinary trip to work into an invitation to think about someone else before the day got away.
Maureen’s Wholesale Flower Market brought 200 bouquets into the city for the nationwide kindness campaign, which turns a simple exchange into something bigger.
Each person receives two bouquets: one to enjoy and one to hand to a friend, coworker, neighbor, or stranger.
That second handoff is the point, transforming a free bunch of blooms into a small, personal act of care.
The effort began in 2015, and the Buffalo florist has taken part for roughly three years.
This time, the bouquets moved quickly: about half of the 200 were gone within the first 30 minutes.
What began as a brief street encounter could travel much farther once recipients passed their extra flowers along.
For a city that proudly calls itself the City of Good Neighbors, the idea feels especially fitting.
One recipient told the florist that the flowers arrived during a difficult day, giving the gesture a meaning beyond their bright colors.
Some people returned after last year’s giveaway, happy to see bouquet sharing back on Buffalo’s streets.
Those reactions explain why this flower giveaway is about more than handing out something pretty on the way to work.
The person holding the second bouquet gets to decide where the kindness goes next, and that choice can feel surprisingly powerful.
The florist hopes to return next year and would like other flower shops to join the effort.
For now, Buffalo has a reminder worth carrying forward: generosity does not need an occasion, only someone willing to pass it along. |
