The News, Eats & Events Shaping Western New York |
Hike for Health will turn Highmark Stadium into a walking course on Saturday, October 10, 2026, raising money for healthcare across Western New York.
Hosted by Kaleida Health and the Buffalo Bills, the event runs from 10 am to 2 pm and gives families and fans a chance to explore the stadium on foot.
Four routes range from an accessible, stroller-friendly half-mile walk on the main concourse to a challenging two-mile course with substantial climbs and descents.
Adult registration costs $50 and counts toward a $200 individual fundraising minimum; children under 18 can register for $20 and must walk with a registered adult.
Participants choose a route and departure time when registering, with starts every 15 minutes from 10 am until 1:30 pm.
Proceeds will support regional healthcare services, equipment and patient care, giving every step a purpose beyond the stadium views. Read More... |
Buffalo’s Allentown neighborhood will get a Halloween makeover when Spooky Porches Allentown returns for its second year, October 5–31.
Organized by the Allentown Association, the celebration invites residents to decorate their front steps with displays that can be creepy, playful or anything in between.
Last year, visitors used an interactive map to find participating porches, and residents competed for prizes, but neither feature has been announced for 2026.
The festivities will gather at the Spooky Allentown Festival on Saturday, October 24, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the green space at 169 Allen Street.
Plans include face painting, live art, tarot readings and local vendors, with beer expected from The Spotted Octopus during a social hour.
Beyond the festival grounds, the decorated porches will give neighbors and visitors a reason to explore Allentown’s historic streets together. Read More... |
A tough homework night can feel easier when a student has someone to work through the problem with.
Brainy Bulls, a free virtual tutoring program from the University at Buffalo, connects Western New York students in grades 5–12 with UB student tutor-mentors.
Students bring their own assignments and questions to 40-minute sessions covering English language arts, math, science and social studies.
Tutor-mentors are vetted, fingerprinted and trained to offer culturally responsive support, with ongoing professional development.
The program also tries to reconnect returning students with a tutor-mentor who is a good fit, giving them a chance to build trust over time.
To participate, students need to attend a Western New York school and have internet access, a suitable device and a valid email address.
Sessions have been offered Monday through Thursday, subject to availability, so families should confirm current hours before making plans.
For families facing a tutoring bill, free, encouraging help could make the next homework night less daunting. Read More... |
