NHL commissioner says outdoor hockey will return to Western N.Y.

It is only a matter of time before another outdoor hockey game is played in Western New York.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman recently indicated that it's only a matter of time before another outdoor hockey game graces Western New York.

During a press conference held prior to Game 2 of the opening round series between the Buffalo Sabres and the Boston Bruins, Bettman shared his thoughts on the prospect of hosting an outdoor game at the new Highmark Stadium.

"I believe it’s not a question of 'if,' it’s a question of 'when' we play an outdoor game in the new stadium," Bettman stated.

He also highlighted that 2028 will mark the 20th anniversary of the inaugural Winter Classic, which was first held in Buffalo.

The original Winter Classic took place on January 1, 2008, at the then-named Ralph Wilson Stadium, where the Sabres faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

That game set a precedent for outdoor hockey events and remains a cherished memory for many fans.

With the new Highmark Stadium set to open soon, the anticipation for hosting another outdoor game is palpable.

While no official announcement has been made, the sentiment among league officials and fans alike suggests that the return of outdoor hockey to Western New York is imminent.

As the community eagerly awaits further developments, the prospect of celebrating two decades since the first Winter Classic with a game in Buffalo adds a layer of excitement to the region's rich hockey tradition.
