New Medical School to Open in Buffalo

A “monumental moment” for the university and the Western New York region.

D’Youville University is set to make history this fall by welcoming the inaugural class to its new College of Osteopathic Medicine, marking a significant milestone for both the institution and the Western New York region.

The university has successfully filled all 90 seats for the first cohort ahead of schedule, reflecting strong demand and academic excellence among applicants. Notably, 46% of the incoming students hail from New York State, underscoring the program's commitment to serving local communities.

Renovations are underway at 285 Delaware Avenue in downtown Buffalo, the future home of the medical school. This 125,000-square-foot facility is being transformed into a state-of-the-art educational environment, featuring advanced anatomy and simulation labs, technology-enabled classrooms, and collaborative learning spaces designed to mirror real-world healthcare settings. The building is expected to open its doors to students in the fall of 2027.

In the interim, first-year instruction will take place on D’Youville’s main campus. The curriculum emphasizes whole-person care, with a focus on primary care specialties such as family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery, and psychiatry. This approach aims to address the critical shortage of primary care physicians, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

To support robust clinical training, D’Youville has secured nearly 50 clinical affiliation agreements with healthcare providers across Western New York, Upstate New York, and New York City. These partnerships will offer students diverse hands-on experiences essential for their medical education.

President Lorrie Clemo expressed pride in this monumental achievement, stating, “Opening a medical school is more than education; it’s about transforming healthcare access, growing the workforce, and strengthening the fabric of our community.”

Prospective students interested in joining future classes can find more information and begin the application process through the university’s official channels.
