'It's heartbreaking': Amherst community mourns beloved teacher and coach

The sudden loss of Jason Beckman leaves a profound void in Amherst's heart

The Amherst community is reeling from the unexpected passing of Jason Beckman, a cherished educator and coach whose influence spanned nearly three decades within the Amherst Central School District.

At 52, Beckman's life was tragically cut short when his vehicle entered the Niagara River near the Bird Overlook. Authorities recovered his body shortly after the incident, leaving many in shock and mourning.

Throughout his tenure, Beckman wore multiple hats: as a physical education teacher at Amherst Middle School, the varsity football coach, and the boys' varsity bowling coach. His dedication to student development was evident in every role he undertook.

The school district expressed their sorrow, stating, "The Amherst Central School District mourns the death of Jason Beckman who has been a member of our school family for more than 29 years." They emphasized his profound impact on countless students and assured the community of support during this challenging time.

Former students and colleagues have been vocal about Beckman's influence. Clare Peifly, an Amherst High School alumna, shared, "He was more than just a teacher; he was a mentor who guided me during my formative years."

Frank Wolf, founder of WNY Athletics, highlighted Beckman's broader impact: "Jason was essential to Western New York high school football. He cared deeply about his players and their futures."

Beckman's legacy is not only marked by his professional achievements but also by his personal passions. An avid fisherman, photographer, and traveler, he cherished moments spent in nature and with loved ones. His positive attitude and generous spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Lori, and their three children: Justyn, Hannah, and Madison. The family has announced visitation hours at Dengler, Roberts, Perna Funeral Home on October 12th, with a memorial service at St. Mary’s Church in Swormville on October 13th.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Movember Foundation, the National Park Foundation, or the Amherst Varsity Football Program, causes that were close to Beckman's heart.

As the community grapples with this profound loss, the memories of Beckman's dedication, mentorship, and warmth will undoubtedly continue to inspire and guide those he touched.
