For the Goo Goo Dolls, coming home to Buffalo this fall means more than playing familiar songs.

The band will take the stage at Town Ballroom on November 20 and 21 for its second annual hometown benefit concerts supporting FeedMore WNY.

All proceeds from both shows will go directly to the organization, which provides nutritious food and skills training to people across Western New York.

It is a meaningful use of two nights that are bound to stir plenty of hometown pride.

Last year’s concerts raised $150,000, giving this return engagement a tough act to follow and a clear reason to exist.

Tickets for both nights go on sale Friday, October 2, at 10 a.m.

For local fans, the Town Ballroom concerts offer a chance to see a band with deep Buffalo roots in a more intimate setting.

John Rzeznik and Robby Takac formed Goo Goo Dolls here in 1986, long before the group became an international name.

Four decades later, the band has sold 15 million records worldwide and earned four Grammy nominations.

Its catalog stretches from “A Boy Named Goo” and “Dizzy Up the Girl” to more recent music, including the seven-track “Summer Anthem” EP.

And “Iris” continues to reach new listeners nearly 30 years after its release, helped along by a new generation of artists performing their own versions.

Those accomplishments make the homecoming notable, but they are not the heart of this story.

This time, the measure of success is what two sold-out rooms could mean beyond the stage.

Across Western New York, access to nutritious food remains a pressing concern for households trying to make ends meet.

The benefit connects a band closely identified with Buffalo to neighbors who can use practical support.

That gives the singalongs a little more weight.

After a busy run of touring and festival appearances, Goo Goo Dolls are bringing the focus back to the city where their story began.

For two November nights, Buffalo gets a homecoming with a purpose.
