Buffalo’s Best Kielbasa Contest Celebrates 12 Years |
Event Features Five Categories, Twelve Judges, One Polka Band, and More |
Buffalo's culinary scene is renowned for its iconic dishes like chicken wings and beef on weck.
Yet, another delicacy has been steadily gaining prominence: kielbasa.
This traditional Polish sausage holds a special place in the hearts of many, especially during the Easter season.
Western New York boasts a rich tradition of sausage-making, with numerous artisans crafting their unique versions of kielbasa.
Recognizing this heritage, the annual Buffalo's Best Kielbasa Contest has become a cherished event, now celebrating its 12th year.
Unlike other competitions, this contest is exclusively for amateur sausage makers, providing home chefs the opportunity to showcase their family recipes and culinary skills.
Event organizer Tod Kniazuk emphasizes the significance of this tradition, stating, "Polish Easter Season in Buffalo just isn't complete without kielbasa, and for many, that means making their own sausage."
The contest is scheduled to take place at Potts Banquet Hall in Cheektowaga on Saturday, March 28, starting at noon.
Admission is free, with food and drinks available for purchase.
Attendees can also enjoy live performances by Captain Tom & The Hooligans, who will bring their modern rendition of old-world polka traditions to the event.
Home sausage makers will compete in five categories:
Traditional Fresh
Holiday Fresh (with marjoram)
Traditional Smoked
Holiday Smoked (with marjoram)
Non-Traditional
Entry is free, and winners will receive titles, trophies, and prizes courtesy of The Sausage Maker, Buffalo Distilling Company, and other sponsors.
The deadline to enter is March 20.
Entry forms can be obtained by emailing buffalobestkielbasa@gmail.com or downloading from the event's Facebook page.
A panel of twelve judges, including local chefs, media personalities, and community leaders, will determine the winners.
Among them are Roy Bakos, Kelly Dudzik, and David Franczyk.
This event not only celebrates the art of sausage-making but also brings the community together to honor a beloved culinary tradition.
Whether you're a participant or an attendee, the contest promises a day filled with delicious food, lively music, and a shared appreciation for Buffalo's rich cultural heritage. |
