Buffalo Ski Center alumni make Olympic impact in freestyle skiing

At the Buffalo Ski Center, a nearly century-old community thrives, nurturing possible future Olympians and local talents.

Nestled in Colden, New York, the Buffalo Ski Center has evolved from a modest family ski club into a vibrant community hub, fostering both recreational enthusiasts and competitive athletes.

Established in 1931 by eight families, the center has grown to encompass 43 trails across 300 acres, catering to skiers of all skill levels. This expansion was bolstered by the merger of the original club with Sitzmarker Ski Club and Ski Tamarack, creating a comprehensive facility that continues to thrive today.

The center's commitment to excellence is evident in its freestyle skiing program, which has produced 14 alumni who have advanced to the U.S. Ski Team or competed in the Olympics. Notably, Matthew DePeters, a former competitor in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, recently contributed as a coach during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. His involvement underscores the center's enduring influence on the sport.

Freestyle skiing at the center encompasses disciplines such as moguls, aerials, and ski cross. The aerials program, in particular, has gained prominence, with athletes performing acrobatic jumps off steep ramps. This focus has been instrumental in preparing skiers for national and international competitions.

The center's dedication to community engagement is highlighted by events like the annual "Cabin Fever" fundraiser. Scheduled for April 25, this event offers beer and wine tastings, live music, and raffles, with proceeds supporting both the center and its freestyle team. Such initiatives not only celebrate the sport but also strengthen the bonds within the local skiing community.

In a significant development, the Buffalo Ski Center joined the Indy Pass network for the 2025/2026 season, expanding access for skiers and enhancing its reputation as a premier destination in Western New York. This partnership reflects the center's ongoing commitment to providing diverse and accessible skiing experiences.

As the Buffalo Ski Center approaches its centennial, it continues to honor its rich heritage while embracing growth and innovation. By nurturing local talent and fostering a sense of community, the center remains a cornerstone of skiing in Buffalo, inspiring future generations to pursue excellence on the slopes.
