Buffalo Harbor State Park set to re-open Friday

The new park includes a "sprayground", buffalo art sculpture and fountain

Buffalo Harbor State Park is set to welcome visitors once again this Friday, unveiling a host of new features designed to enhance the waterfront experience. The park's transformation includes a state-of-the-art sprayground, a striking buffalo art sculpture and fountain, and expanded amenities for the community.

The centerpiece of the renovation is the 6,700-square-foot sprayground, offering a refreshing escape for families during the warmer months. This interactive water play area is equipped with 162 water elements, including spray jets, misting arches, and a dumping bucket, catering to children of all ages. Sustainability is at the forefront, with the system designed to recirculate 11,000 gallons of water per minute, minimizing waste and environmental impact. The sprayground will operate daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting.

Adding to the park's allure is a remarkable buffalo sculpture by artist Ai Qiu Hopen. Standing 13 feet tall and 18 feet wide, the sculpture is composed of 2,000 stainless-steel birds representing 15 native New York bird species. This artwork symbolizes the unity and collective strength of the community, making it a focal point for visitors.

The park's enhancements also feature an expanded, universally accessible playground with swinging, spinning, and zip-line elements, ensuring inclusive fun for all children. A new café and retail space, along with dedicated areas for food trucks, provide diverse dining options. Additional amenities include public restrooms, a park office, and updated furnishings like pergola swings overlooking the harbor, creating inviting spaces for relaxation.

Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the significance of these improvements, stating that the revitalized park offers a world-class destination for recreation and relaxation. She highlighted the park's role in providing affordable recreational opportunities and adding vibrancy to Buffalo's waterfront.

The reopening of Buffalo Harbor State Park marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance Buffalo's Outer Harbor, offering residents and visitors a revitalized space to enjoy the natural beauty and community spirit of the area.
