Amherst Costco Construction Delays Push Opening to August |
Unfavorable weather conditions cited as primary cause for postponement |
Residents of Amherst eagerly anticipating the arrival of the town's first Costco will need to exercise patience a bit longer.
Originally slated for a spring 2026 debut, the warehouse giant's opening has been postponed to August due to unforeseen construction delays.
Amherst Town Supervisor Shawn Lavin attributes the setback primarily to unfavorable weather conditions that have hampered construction progress.
"The persistent inclement weather has significantly impacted our construction timeline," Lavin explained.
"We are committed to ensuring the project meets our quality standards, even if it means adjusting our schedule."
The Costco is being constructed on Ridge Lea Road, at the site of the former Tony Roma's restaurant.
Once completed, it will be the first of its kind in Western New York, offering residents access to the retailer's renowned bulk goods and services.
In addition to the warehouse, the development includes a new Dick's Sporting Goods store adjacent to the Costco site.
Construction for Dick's Sporting Goods is already underway and is expected to open concurrently with Costco in August.
To address potential traffic concerns associated with the new developments, the town has initiated several infrastructure improvements.
These include the realignment of Romney Road at North Bailey Avenue and the installation of new traffic signals at key intersections.
"We understand that traffic is a major concern for our residents," Lavin stated.
"Our goal is to implement measures that will ease congestion and ensure a smooth flow of vehicles in the area."
Despite the delays, the community remains optimistic about the benefits the new Costco will bring, including job opportunities and increased retail options.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official town communications for further updates on the project's progress. |
