America 250 in WNY: Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site

"This is a significant piece of American history that we have here in Buffalo that I don't think a lot of people know the context about what happened here"

Buffalo, N.Y. — As the United States commemorates its 250th anniversary in 2026, the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site stands as a testament to a pivotal moment in both national and local history.

In 1901, Buffalo hosted the Pan-American Exposition, a grand event celebrating the unity and progress of the Americas. During this exposition, President William McKinley was tragically assassinated, leading to Vice President Theodore Roosevelt's swift inauguration at the Delaware Avenue residence of his friend, Ansley Wilcox.

Spencer Morgan, executive director of the site, emphasizes the significance of this event: "The eyes of the world were on the columns here at Delaware Avenue, waiting to see the new young president. This is significant. We are one of four cities in the country that has hosted an inauguration outside of D.C."

The Wilcox Mansion, originally part of the Poinsett Barracks built in the 1830s, has undergone numerous transformations. After serving as military quarters, it became a private residence and eventually the site of Roosevelt's inauguration. The mansion's preservation is a testament to Buffalo's dedication to its historical heritage.

Today, the site operates as Buffalo's only National Park Service unit, offering guided tours that delve into this critical chapter of American history. Tours are available daily, with the first tour at 10:30 a.m. and the last at 3:30 p.m. Reservations are strongly recommended due to limited space. For more information, visitors can call (716) 884-0095.

As part of the America 250 celebrations, the site will host special exhibits and events throughout the summer, including a temporary exhibit titled "12 Days in Buffalo," opening on August 1, which provides an in-depth look at the events surrounding Roosevelt's inauguration.

Reflecting on the site's importance, Morgan states, "We have to remember that. That is a significant piece of American history."
