For Buffalo letter carriers, the NALC national election is more than a leadership shuffle: their local president now has a national seat.

David Grosskopf Jr., president of Branch 3, has been elected a trustee as the union prepares for a change in direction.

He is joining a new administration led by James Henry, who has been elected NALC president.

Grosskopf’s victory puts a Western New York voice inside decisions that could affect letter carriers far beyond Buffalo.

The October election followed a campaign by the Concerned Letter Carriers slate, which called for stronger pay, benefits and working conditions.

More than half of the slate’s 24 candidates won, giving the group a chance to turn its promises into policy.

That is where expectations will meet a difficult test.

Grosskopf became involved after growing frustrated with national leadership, particularly its handling of a postal contract opposed by many members.

For carriers who spend long days on the street in heat, snow and rain, compensation is hardly an abstract debate.

It shapes whether a demanding public-service job can still support a stable, middle-class life.

Buffalo’s Branch 3 represents about 2,000 members, and Grosskopf’s opposition to postal processing consolidation has already put local concerns in the spotlight.

Now, as NALC trustee David Grosskopf, he will need to carry that same attention to members’ concerns into a national role.

The shift from campaigning to governing begins with a straightforward question: what will change for carriers on their routes?

Henry, the union’s first Black president, also takes office with a promise to put members’ interests at the center of its decisions.

His election marks a significant moment, but symbolism alone will not ease pressure on household budgets.

Grosskopf’s term as Branch 3 president runs into 2027, keeping his Buffalo responsibilities in view as he takes on national duties.

For Western New York carriers, that connection could help ensure their daily challenges remain part of the conversation.

The NALC national election has delivered new leaders; members will judge them by the improvements they can achieve.
