Western New York shoppers may soon have a new reason to visit Walden Galleria: IKEA plans to open there in early 2027.

The IKEA furniture store would occupy the lower level of the former Sears and Sears Auto space at the mall’s north end.

For Cheektowaga, the announcement gives a prominent vacant retail space a new purpose.

Tentative plans call for roughly 67,000 square feet, with an IKEA showroom, marketplace and Swedish Bistro under one roof.

That means shoppers could browse furnished room displays before picking up smaller home goods or stopping for a meal.

It is an appealing prospect for households that have long wanted a nearby place to explore IKEA’s designs in person.

The planned opening would make Walden Galleria the company’s second upstate New York location, following its store at Destiny USA in Syracuse.

It would also bring IKEA to Western New York for the first time.

Walden Galleria officials have framed the addition as a major step for a shopping center that draws visitors for dining and entertainment as well as retail.

A destination store could give shoppers another reason to spend time at the mall and visit neighboring businesses.

State Sen. April Baskin welcomed the investment, pointing to potential jobs and the prospect of attracting customers from across the region.

Those benefits will depend on how the project takes shape, but the planned reuse of the Sears space is significant on its own.

For residents, the practical questions remain: when hiring will begin, what the finished store will offer and how busy opening day might be.

Those details have not been announced in the information provided so far.

Until then, the clearest picture of the IKEA store opening is a combined showroom, shopping marketplace and bistro planned for early 2027.

For a mall with a sizable former department-store space to fill, the arrival could mark a meaningful change in how shoppers use that end of the property.
