Wounded WNY soldier to receive specially built home

100 volunteers work to finish 4,000-square-foot house in two weeks

A wounded war veteran from Western New York is on the verge of receiving a specially adapted home, thanks to the dedicated efforts of a nonprofit organization and a community of volunteers.

A Soldier’s Journey Home, a national nonprofit, unites first responders, veterans, tradespeople, businesses, and community volunteers to construct mortgage-free, accessible homes for disabled veterans.

Currently, a 4,000-square-foot residence is under construction on Falls Road in Westfield for disabled U.S. Army veteran Nathan Kalwicki and his wife, Veronica. The project commenced on May 18, with approximately 100 volunteers aiming to complete the build within two weeks.

Kalwicki, who sustained severe injuries during a 2011 mission in Afghanistan, resulting in the amputation of his right leg below the knee and other medical complications, expressed profound gratitude for the support. He shared that this initiative is a "dream come true" and looks forward to establishing roots in the community with his wife.

The home build has been made possible by the generosity of several Western New Yorkers, including Scott Beiler, TRS Heating & Air Conditioning, New Era, Sean Croddy, Brian Whitman, and Bill and Carolyn Panzicki.

During his extensive treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, Kalwicki formed a band with fellow disabled veterans called The Resilient, as part of MusiCorps, a nonprofit that encourages veterans to use music as part of their recovery.

The community is invited to a celebration unveiling Kalwicki’s new home on May 30, where The Resilient will also perform later that evening.
