WNY firms supply components, systems for Artemis II mission |
Western New York companies with aviation and aerospace heritage continue a long-running tradition. |
Western New York's aerospace industry has once again demonstrated its pivotal role in space exploration with significant contributions to NASA's Artemis II mission.
On April 1, 2026, the Artemis II mission launched, marking a historic step in returning humans to the Moon. This mission's success is a testament to the collaborative efforts of numerous companies, including several based in Western New York.
In Elma, Moog Inc. played a crucial role by providing thrust vector control actuators essential for steering the rocket. These actuators adjust the engine nozzles, ensuring the rocket maintains its correct trajectory during ascent. Jim Steffan, Programs Director of Space Actuation Systems at Moog, highlighted the collective effort, stating, "We have a talented cross-functional team that's worked through the design and development, the build and the test of the hardware... It's really a team effort that we saw, the fruits of their labor at the successful launch." Another significant contributor is Taylor Devices in North Tonawanda. Renowned for their seismic damper shock absorbers, they developed technology to precisely retract the launch pad umbilical cords during liftoff. This innovation ensures a smooth separation of the rocket from the ground systems, a critical aspect of the launch sequence.
Eaton Corporation, located in Orchard Park, supplied vital oxygen systems for the Artemis II mission. Their equipment regulates oxygen pressure within the astronauts' spacesuits, transitioning from high-pressure storage to breathable levels, ensuring the crew's safety and comfort during the mission.
The collective efforts of these Western New York companies underscore the region's longstanding tradition in the aerospace sector. Their expertise and innovation continue to be integral to the success of missions like Artemis II, highlighting the area's significant contributions to space exploration. |
