Western New York Tattoo Shops Grapple with Supply Shortages Amid Canadian Tariffs |
Local artists face rising costs and limited options as key suppliers halt U.S. shipments |
For years, tattoo studios across Western New York have depended on Canadian suppliers like Eikon for their equipment needs.
However, recent tariffs imposed by the U.S. government have led Eikon to cease shipments to the United States, leaving local artists scrambling for alternatives.
Jeffrey Bagneschi of North Star Tattoo expressed his frustration, noting that Eikon had been a reliable source, often delivering supplies within 24 hours.
Now, with Eikon's withdrawal, Bagneschi and others are facing significant challenges in maintaining their operations.
In an attempt to restock, Bagneschi turned to another Canadian supplier, only to be hit with a 40% tariff on his order.
This substantial increase has forced many shops to reconsider their sourcing strategies to avoid such hefty fees.
Christopher Coronado, owner of Coronado Ink, highlighted the broader issue of rising supply costs since the COVID-19 pandemic.
He pointed out that while some materials are sourced domestically, a significant portion comes from countries like China, further complicating the supply chain.
Coronado emphasized the importance of finding affordable supplies to continue delivering quality work to clients.
The situation has been exacerbated by the Trump administration's recent announcement of an additional 10% tariff on Canadian imports.
This move was in response to an anti-tariff advertisement aired in Ontario, further straining U.S.-Canada trade relations.
As of now, the White House has not specified when this new tariff will take effect.
The ripple effects of these tariffs are being felt across various sectors in Western New York.
According to recent reports, Canadian tourism, which constitutes nearly 40% of Buffalo's tourism economy, has seen a significant decline.
Hotel occupancy in Niagara Falls has dropped by over 7% compared to the previous year, and local businesses are experiencing decreased foot traffic and revenue.
For tattoo artists and shop owners, the combination of supply shortages and increased costs presents a daunting challenge.
Many are now exploring alternative suppliers and adjusting their business models to navigate this turbulent period.
As the situation evolves, the resilience and adaptability of these local businesses will be crucial in overcoming the hurdles posed by the ongoing trade tensions. |
