Western New York prepares for 'Big Boy' stop on America 250 tour

Local viewing opportunities will take place in Ripley, Buffalo, Silver Springs and Letchworth State Park

Union Pacific's legendary Big Boy No. 4014, the world's largest operating steam locomotive, is set to make its inaugural journey to the East Coast as part of the America 250 tour, commemorating the nation's 250th anniversary.

Weighing a staggering 1.2 million pounds, this colossal engine was originally constructed between 1941 and 1944 by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, New York, to haul heavy freight during World War II. Today, No. 4014 stands as the sole operational locomotive of its kind.

The Big Boy's tour includes several stops in Western New York, offering residents and visitors a rare opportunity to witness this historic machine up close.

On Tuesday, June 9, the locomotive will make a brief stop in Ripley, arriving at the State Street crossing at 12:00 noon and departing at 12:30 p.m. Later that day, while stationed at Buffalo's Bison Rail Yard—which is closed to the public—a watch party will be hosted at the Heritage Discovery Center, located at 100 Lee Street, starting at 11 a.m.

The main event unfolds on Wednesday, June 10, when the Big Boy will be on public display in Buffalo from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. To facilitate access, free shuttles will operate from the Walden Galleria Mall's north side near Primark. It's important to note that there will be no parking or pedestrian access at the display site; attendees are encouraged to utilize the shuttle service. Admission is free, but capacity is limited.

The tour continues on Thursday, June 11, with the Big Boy departing Buffalo at 9:00 a.m. It will make a brief stop in Silver Springs at the North Main Street crossing, arriving at 11:45 a.m. and departing at 12:00 noon. Enthusiasts can also catch a glimpse of the locomotive as it passes through Letchworth State Park over the Genesee River Arch Bridge at approximately 12:20 p.m. Please note that park admission is required for this viewing.

Reflecting on the significance of this tour, Ed Dickens, Lead Engineer of Big Boy No. 4014, remarked, "It's such an important part of American history and the development of the west." He added, "This is quickly becoming a national icon."

For those planning to attend, the weather forecast for Buffalo during the event is favorable. On Tuesday, June 9, expect plenty of sunshine with a high of 80°F (27°C) and a low of 67°F (19°C). Wednesday, June 10, is anticipated to be partly sunny and humid, with a high of 78°F (26°C) and a low of 66°F (19°C).

Don't miss this unique opportunity to witness a piece of living history as Big Boy No. 4014 steams through Western New York, celebrating America's rich railroad heritage.
