Western New York nurse builds skincare business now supplying local hospitals

Inspired by her daughter’s eczema, a Western New York nurse turned entrepreneur has grown her natural skincare line into a thriving business

In Buffalo, New York, a dedicated nurse has transformed a personal challenge into a flourishing enterprise, bringing comfort to hospital patients through her natural skincare products.

Jill Miller, a nurse with over 20 years of experience, founded Skincare Essentials by Jill six years ago after her daughter, Saniya, was born with infant eczema. Uncomfortable with the idea of applying steroids and antibiotics to her newborn's delicate skin, Miller was determined to create a natural solution to manage dry and eczema-prone skin.

What began as a mother's quest to soothe her child's skin has blossomed into a thriving business. Miller now offers a range of products, including body oils, body butters, and specialty soaps, addressing concerns like acne, dark spots, and dry skin. Notably, her hair oils have become particularly popular among customers.

Over the years, Miller's business has expanded beyond online sales. Her products are now available in Tops Friendly Markets, through a skincare vending machine at Buffalo Niagara International Airport, and at a storefront in Niagara Falls, where all the products are made.

A significant milestone for Skincare Essentials by Jill is its partnership with Kaleida Health, supplying hair and skincare products to patients at several hospitals, including Buffalo General, Millard Fillmore Suburban, and Golisano Children's Hospital. This collaboration has been ongoing for three years, with the latest order covering the entire year for three hospitals.

For Miller, this partnership is a meaningful extension of her nursing career. She believes that when patients feel good about themselves, it positively impacts their overall well-being, especially during hospital stays when skin and hair often suffer.

Balancing a full-time nursing career, running a business, and raising her son and daughter is challenging, but Miller hopes her journey inspires other women to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. She aims to be an example for women managing careers, businesses, and families, showing that they can achieve their goals too.
