Recent land purchases enhance wildlife corridors and protect vital habitats |
The Western New York Land Conservancy has made significant strides in expanding the Western New York Wildway through recent land acquisitions.
In November 2025, the Conservancy secured the 226-acre Black Creek Preserve in Birdsall, Allegany County.
This area encompasses forests, wetlands, and headwater streams, contributing to the protection of drinking water sources and enhancing wildlife corridors.
Additionally, the Conservancy has permanently protected the 86-acre Bush property in Wales, NY.
This hardwood forest, featuring small streams and vernal pools, is situated near the headwaters of Hunter’s Creek.
These acquisitions are part of the Conservancy's "4 for '24" initiative, which also includes the Paul property in Concord, the Kaiser Preserve in Concord, and the Wales Ravine in Wales.
Together, these properties total 155 acres and are strategically located within critical linkages of the Wildway, facilitating wildlife movement between large forested areas.
In Cattaraugus County, the Conservancy opened the 185-acre Janet Gallogly Allegany Wildlands in 2025.
This preserve offers 2.1 miles of publicly accessible hiking trails and is part of a broader network of protected forests, including adjacent state lands.
These efforts are crucial, as only 1.3% of the identified 360,000 acres of critical linkages in the Wildway have been protected to date.
The Conservancy aims to significantly increase this percentage to ensure the preservation of wildlife habitats and the protection of water quality for future generations.
