UB Secures $50 Million for Pioneering Biofabrication Research Center |
State Investment to Propel University at Buffalo's Leadership in Biomedical Innovation |
The University at Buffalo (UB) is set to establish a cutting-edge biofabrication and imaging research facility, thanks to a substantial $50 million investment from the state.
Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul on Tuesday, this funding is part of the 2025-26 state budget and aims to position UB at the forefront of biomedical research.
Governor Hochul emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, "Investing in a new biofabrication research and imaging hub at the State University of New York at Buffalo will help ensure our state is a leader in this essential, life-saving field."
The forthcoming Biofabrication and Imaging Research Center will serve as a collaborative hub for faculty across various disciplines, including engineering, medicine, structural biology, biomedical informatics, dental, pharmacy, life sciences, and arts and sciences.
This interdisciplinary approach is designed to advance research in regenerative medicine, advanced therapeutics, drug discovery, and medical devices.
Enhanced imaging capabilities within the center will bolster UB's neurological research, focusing on diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, strokes, and Alzheimer's.
By analyzing living and biomolecular products in tissues, cells, organic molecules, and biomaterials, researchers aim to deepen the understanding of these conditions.
SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. highlighted the broader impact of this investment, noting, "We are excited about this investment into the university, which will allow faculty to keep building on their existing biotech research, and expand to include new areas, in service of improving health outcomes."
In alignment with Governor Hochul's objective to double research activities at SUNY institutions, this project underscores the state's commitment to fostering innovation and improving health outcomes.
Complementing the state's investment, UB is dedicating an additional $16.7 million from its endowment to support faculty research, further solidifying its commitment to advancing biomedical sciences.
As the university embarks on this transformative journey, the new center is poised to become a beacon of innovation, driving discoveries that could revolutionize treatments and therapies for complex diseases. |
