National honor comes as Shea’s Celebrates its 100th anniversary |
Shea's Buffalo Theatre has been honored as a Distinguished Theatre by the Theatre Historical Society of America (THS), a national nonprofit dedicated to preserving America's historic theaters.
This recognition coincides with Shea's centennial anniversary, marking 100 years since its grand opening on January 16, 1926.
Designed by renowned architects Rapp and Rapp, the 3,019-seat venue is celebrated as one of the finest surviving movie palaces in the country.
In June, Shea's Buffalo welcomed THS members and theater historians from across the nation as a featured stop on the Western New York Conclave Theatre Tour, a four-day conference spotlighting the region's grandest historic venues.
During this visit, THS presented Shea's with the Distinguished Theatre designation, acknowledging its significant contribution to America's theatrical heritage.
Brian Higgins, President and CEO of Shea's Performing Arts Center, expressed gratitude for the honor, stating, "This recognition underscores the enduring legacy of Shea's Buffalo Theatre and its vital role in our community's cultural fabric."
As part of its centennial celebrations, Shea's has launched the "Elevate Shea's" expansion project, a $34.6 million initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility and modernizing the historic theater to meet the needs of future generations.
