Proposed bill would bolster pothole coverage across N.Y. state |
State Sen. Jeremy Cooney unveiled a new piece of legislation |
State Senator Jeremy Cooney has introduced legislation aimed at holding New York State accountable for vehicle damage caused by potholes throughout the entire year.
Under current law, drivers can only seek compensation for pothole-related damages on state roads between May 1 and November 15.
Cooney's proposed bill seeks to eliminate this seasonal restriction, allowing motorists to file claims year-round.
"It's unfair that drivers hitting a pothole in April are left without recourse, while those in May can seek reimbursement," Cooney stated.
He emphasized the need for consistent protection for all drivers, regardless of the time of year.
Additionally, the legislation mandates that the New York State Department of Transportation develop an online platform for residents to report pothole locations.
This initiative aims to expedite repairs and enhance road safety.
In Buffalo, where harsh winters contribute to frequent pothole formation, this bill has garnered significant attention.
Local drivers often face costly repairs due to road defects, and the proposed changes could provide much-needed financial relief.
By extending liability throughout the year and improving reporting mechanisms, Cooney's proposal seeks to address longstanding concerns about road maintenance and driver protection in New York State. |
