New Traffic Signals Coming to North Bailey Avenue in Amherst |
Enhanced Safety Measures and Traffic Flow Improvements Set for October Installation |
Amherst, NYâIn a significant move to enhance road safety and traffic efficiency, the Town of Amherst has announced the installation of two new traffic signals on North Bailey Avenue.
According to Town Supervisor Brian Kulpa, these signals are scheduled for installation during the week of October 20 and are expected to be fully operational by the end of the month.
The new traffic signals will be located at:
Romney Road and North Bailey Avenue
Best Buy driveway and North Bailey Avenue
Recent infrastructure improvements on North Bailey Avenue, particularly north of Romney Road, have included repaving and ongoing striping work.
Notably, turning lanes into the Dick's Sporting Goods/Costco plaza are being added at both signalized intersections.
Drivers are urged to exercise caution as crews complete the striping process.
To inform motorists of these changes, the town will deploy 'New Traffic Pattern' and 'New Signal Operation Ahead' signage.
Additionally, the project includes the integration of Miovision technology at these intersections.
This advanced system utilizes 360-degree cameras to monitor traffic flow, aiming to reduce congestion and improve overall traffic management.
Amherst has been at the forefront of adopting smart traffic solutions.
In recent years, the town has transitioned 56 traffic signals to Miovision technology, resulting in travel time reductions of up to 11% at certain intersections.
Supervisor Kulpa emphasized the significance of this upgrade, stating, "We replaced decades-old loop detector technology with smart signals, and that's what this project was about for Amherst."
These enhancements are part of a broader initiative to modernize Amherst's infrastructure.
Earlier this year, the town received $3.576 million from the New York State Department of Transportation for the reconfiguration of the Maple Road and North Bailey Avenue intersection, further underscoring the commitment to improving traffic conditions and safety for residents and visitors alike.
As Amherst continues to grow, these developments reflect a proactive approach to addressing the evolving needs of the community.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about ongoing projects and to provide feedback to local officials to ensure that the town's infrastructure meets the highest standards of safety and efficiency. |
