New program aims to bring more business to downtown Buffalo

The Meet Me Downtown Initiative, a partnership between the city of Buffalo, Erie County and M&T Bank, is a new program aimed at bringing more vibrancy and business to Downtown Buffalo.

The Meet Me Downtown Initiative, a collaborative effort between the city of Buffalo, Erie County, and M&T Bank, is set to invigorate downtown Buffalo by providing grants to local groups and businesses for hosting community-focused events.

Mayor Sean Ryan emphasized the importance of such partnerships, stating that building a better Buffalo requires strong collaborations and a shared commitment to investing in the city. He highlighted that the initiative aims to create a more vibrant downtown, encouraging residents and visitors to experience Buffalo beyond the traditional workday.

This summer, the initiative features six headline events, including two block parties on Chippewa Street (July 11 and August 8), a Street Soccer Cup & World Cup Watch Party (July 18 on Chippewa), Picklefest (August 16 at Buffalo RiverWorks), The Main Block Party (August 29 at Fountain Plaza), and Circle the Square 2 (September 26 at Niagara Square).

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz expressed enthusiasm for the series, noting that as people look for activities and ways to gather, the Meet Me Downtown events will offer entertainment and fun for all, making the summer months even more enjoyable. He added that these events provide opportunities to enjoy the downtown atmosphere while spending time with family and friends.

In addition to these events, downtown Buffalo is experiencing a surge of new businesses. Old City Pizza recently opened in the cellar of Pearl Street Grill & Brewery, offering Neapolitan-style pizzas and other Italian fare. Hencraft, a new fast-casual chicken concept, launched its first brick-and-mortar location at 235 Delaware Avenue. Furthermore, the Colored Musicians Club & Jazz Museum, one of the nation’s oldest Black-owned clubs, reopened after a $3 million renovation, featuring a renovated club and bar, and an upgraded museum with interactive exhibits.

These developments, alongside the Meet Me Downtown Initiative, are set to bring renewed energy and vibrancy to downtown Buffalo, offering residents and visitors a plethora of activities and experiences to enjoy throughout the summer and beyond.
