New Car Seat Regulations Set to Impact Buffalo Families in 2026 |
Enhanced safety standards aim to protect children on the road |
Buffalo parents, take note: significant changes to car seat regulations are on the horizon, with new federal standards slated to take effect in December 2026.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced amendments to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 213a, focusing on side-impact protection for child restraint systems. These updates, effective December 5, 2026, will require car seats to undergo rigorous side-impact testing to enhance child safety during collisions.
For families in Buffalo, this means ensuring that any new car seats purchased after this date comply with the updated standards. Existing car seats, provided they are not expired and meet current safety guidelines, remain acceptable for use.
In addition to federal changes, New York State is considering legislation to further bolster child passenger safety. Assembly Bill A895A proposes that insurance companies cover the cost of a car seat upon the discharge of a newborn from the hospital. This initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens on new parents while promoting the use of proper child restraint systems from the outset.
Furthermore, Senate Bill S2265 seeks to mandate that children under eight years old be secured in appropriate car seats or booster seats while riding in taxis or livery vehicles. This measure underscores the state's commitment to child safety across all modes of transportation.
Buffalo residents are encouraged to stay informed about these impending changes and to consult with local child passenger safety technicians for guidance on selecting and installing compliant car seats. Ensuring that children are properly restrained is a crucial step in safeguarding their well-being on the road. |
