Leather shop born at the beginning of Buffalo preparing to close its doors after five generations

M. Steffan's & Sons has called Main Street in Buffalo, NY, home since 1851.

M. Steffan's & Sons, a cherished family-owned business on Main Street in Buffalo, NY, is preparing to close its doors after 175 years of service.

Established in 1851, this leather goods shop has been a cornerstone of the community, witnessing Buffalo's transformation from a burgeoning city to its current vibrancy.

Inside the shop at 761 Main Street, remnants of a bygone era abound: tools, materials, and records meticulously preserved over five generations.

Cabinets and drawers hold decades of history, from shoe stretchers to handwritten sales books dating back to the 19th century.

Linda Steffan, the last in the family to run the business, has managed the store for over three decades.

The shop has occupied its current location since 1978, having moved from 813 Main Street, now a parking lot.

The store's origins date to a time when leather goods were crafted entirely by hand.

Early work included boots, belts, and handbags, each piece cut, shaped, and finished individually.

Artifacts from that era remain.

A sales ledger from 1890 lists items such as a men's boot tree priced at just $2.25.

Nearby, there's a vintage cash register and old tax documents from the 1930s, when Linda's Grandpa George was running the store.

Shelves and tables are still stocked with zippers, buckles, and laces, inventory that once supported a bustling trade.

Business isn't what it used to be, Linda said, having witnessed online shopping and disposable lifestyles replace local stores and care for quality items that could last multiple generations.

As the store prepares to close, many of those items remain in place and up for sale, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of craftsmanship and tradition.

For Steffan, the decision to retire marks the end of a long chapter for both her family and the Buffalo community.

It brings her to tears when she tries to talk about it, so she lets the walls speak for themselves.

As M. Steffan's & Sons prepares to close, Main Street continues to evolve.

Recent developments include the opening of The Monroe, an $8.4 million rehabilitation project that converted the iconic Record Theatre complex into 17 affordable apartments and 11,400 square feet of commercial and retail space.

Additionally, the Market Arcade 8 in downtown Buffalo is set to reopen soon, bringing new energy to the area.

These changes reflect the ongoing transformation of Main Street, blending historic preservation with modern revitalization efforts.
