Documentary 'The Forgotten Trunks of Jaime Nunó' Explores His Life and Legacy in Western New York |
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The rich tapestry of Western New York's Hispanic heritage is about to gain a new thread with the upcoming documentary, 'The Forgotten Trunks of Jaime Nunó.'
International filmmakers Raul Cortes from Mexico and Eduard Miguel from Spain have embarked on a journey to Buffalo to shed light on the life of Jaime Nunó, the composer of Mexico's National Anthem, who called Buffalo home for nearly four decades.
Born in Spain in 1824, Nunó's musical odyssey took him from Europe to Cuba, then to Mexico, where he composed the music for the national anthem in 1854.
After a stint in New York City, he settled in Buffalo in 1869, dedicating himself to music education and community engagement until his death in 1908.
On October 14, 2025, the Buffalo History Museum hosted a special panel discussion and keynote presentation titled 'The Forgotten Trunks of Jaime Nunó.'
This event featured Cortes and Miguel, who shared insights into their research and unveiled a trailer for the documentary.
The film delves into Nunó's profound impact on Buffalo's cultural landscape and his enduring legacy in the Hispanic community.
Attendees were treated to historical images and narratives that highlighted Nunó's contributions as a music director and vocal instructor in Buffalo.
The documentary aims to bridge historical gaps and celebrate the shared cultural heritage between Buffalo and Mexico.
Once completed, 'The Forgotten Trunks of Jaime Nunó' is slated for broadcast on public television networks in Spain and Mexico, bringing international attention to this unique chapter of Buffalo's history.
For those interested in exploring more about Nunó's life, the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library offers a collection of photographs and documents detailing his contributions to the region's Hispanic heritage.
Additionally, the Buffalo Toronto Public Media has produced a segment titled 'Heritage Moments: The Buffalonian Who Wrote the Mexican National Anthem,' providing further insights into his remarkable journey.
As Buffalo continues to honor its diverse cultural roots, the story of Jaime Nunó stands as a testament to the city's rich and interconnected history. |
