Gateway Harbor welcomes Seneca Chief on 'Back to Buffalo' voyage

The visit celebrated the region’s rich Erie Canal heritage and highlighted the enduring connection between Western New York communities and the iconic waterway.

Gateway Harbor recently hosted the historic Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief during its 'Back to Buffalo' voyage, celebrating the region's rich Erie Canal heritage.

The Seneca Chief, a full-scale replica of the original 1825 vessel, embarked on a journey from Waterford, New York, retracing the path that once connected communities along the canal.

On June 27, the boat departed from Gateway Park in North Tonawanda, zip code 14120, at 9:15 a.m., accompanied by the E.M. Cotter Fireboat and welcomed by bagpiper Henry Schmitt.

It arrived at Buffalo's Canalside, zip code 14202, around noon, where a welcome ceremony commenced at 1 p.m.

The event featured remarks from local officials and Indigenous scholar Melissa Parker Leonard, highlighting the enduring connection between Western New York communities and the iconic waterway.

The ceremony concluded with the final 'Gathering of the Waters,' a tradition where communities contributed water from their part of the Erie Canal to a barrel aboard the Seneca Chief.

This water was used to nourish a White Pine tree planted at Buffalo's Seneca Bluffs Park, symbolizing sustainability and unity among canal communities.

Following the ceremony, the public explored the boat's newly completed interior and educational exhibits.

From June 28 through September 27, visitors can tour the Seneca Chief every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, delving into the boat's history and the Erie Canal's impact on the region.

Additional summer events at Canalside include lectures, dockside demonstrations, and on-the-water experiences like 'Tuesday Night Paddles' and 'Thursday Night Sunset Cruises.'

Admission is free and family-friendly, with donations supporting the Buffalo Maritime Center's educational and community programs.

In related developments, Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled renderings for a transformative cruise ship terminal on Buffalo's Outer Harbor, located at the Slip 2 parcel on Fuhrmann Boulevard.

Construction is slated to begin in July 2026, with a grand opening scheduled for the 2028 summer season.

This project aims to support Great Lakes cruises and bolster the travel and leisure sector in Western New York.

While the permanent facility is under construction, Buffalo will welcome its first cruise ship in decades at a temporary docking site near the Erie Basin Marina.

These initiatives underscore the region's commitment to revitalizing its waterfront and celebrating its maritime heritage.

For those interested in exploring the area, zip code lookup tools can assist in finding specific locations, while state abbreviations and country codes are essential for accurate addressing and communication.

As Buffalo continues to invest in its waterfront and maritime history, these developments offer residents and visitors alike opportunities to engage with the city's rich past and vibrant future.
