As Lent commences, Western New York's cherished tradition of Friday fish fries returns, drawing locals to beloved establishments renowned for their consistent quality.
Hoak's Restaurant in Hamburg stands out for its unwavering commitment to freshness. Their menu features a variety of preparations, including beer-battered, Cajun, garlic parmesan, and southwest styles. Owner Kevin Hoak emphasizes that while sides are available, patrons primarily come for the fish itself. He also credits his dedicated staff, noting that during Lent, everyone puts in extra effort to meet the increased demand.
In Niagara County, the Wilson Volunteer Fire Hall has been a community staple since 1972. Co-chair of the fish fry, Joyce Banagis, highlights the collaborative effort involved, with volunteers preparing coleslaw on Thursdays and ramping up activities on Fridays to serve approximately 700 dinners each week.
These establishments exemplify the dedication and consistency that make Western New York's fish fry season a time-honored tradition, bringing communities together over plates of freshly prepared fish. |
