Exploring the Seven Wonders of the Erie Canalway Trail

A Journey Through History, Challenges, and Advocacy

Embarking on the Erie Canalway Trail from Albany to Buffalo, Jim and Lisa Saunders anticipated a leisurely trek along the historic waterway.

However, their journey unfolded with unexpected challenges.

They faced relentless mosquitoes, aggressive geese, and unpredictable weather, including torrential downpours and blinding snow.

Physical strains like swollen knees and aching feet tested their resolve.

Despite these obstacles, the couple found solace in the trail's beauty and engineering marvels.

Lisa documented their experiences in her 2024 book, Walking the Erie Canalway Trail: A Search for 7 Wonders, Bathrooms and Beer to Stop CMV.

The book delves into the canal's rich history and highlights the challenges faced by modern travelers aiming to become "end-to-enders"—those who traverse the entire canal by foot, bike, or kayak.

Lisa identifies what she considers the "7 Wonders of the Erie Canalway Trail," showcasing intriguing sites along the route.

She also explores her family's connection to the canal.

Her ancestors, Jacob and Augustus Leach, played pivotal roles in the canal's success.

Jacob, a flour miller and whiskey distiller, welcomed the inaugural canal boat parade in 1825, featuring Governor DeWitt Clinton, into Lyons, NY.

Lisa also investigates a family tragedy: her great-great-aunt Rebecca's fatal plunge into the canal over 80 years ago.

The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, established in 2000, recognizes the canal's role in spreading transformative ideas like the abolition of slavery and women's rights across upstate New York.

Historical accounts note that the Women's Rights Movement utilized the canal for campaigns, with suffragettes like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony traveling along its path to advocate for change.

Lisa believes the canal continues to be a conduit for important messages.

She and Jim undertook their journey to raise awareness about congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV), a leading cause of birth defects.

By sharing their story, they hope to inspire others to explore the trail and support their advocacy.

As a Canalway Challenge Ambassador, Lisa remains active on the trail, encouraging others to experience its wonders.

Her book is available for purchase, with proceeds supporting related causes.
