Erie County Issues Travel Advisory as Major Winter Storm Approaches

Residents Urged to Exercise Caution Amid Forecasted Heavy Snow and High Winds

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz has announced a Travel Advisory effective from 10:00 PM Sunday, January 18, as a significant winter storm is set to impact Western New York.

Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel due to anticipated heavy snowfall and strong winds, which may lead to near-whiteout conditions.

During a press conference in downtown Buffalo, Deputy County Executive Lisa Chimera highlighted the fortunate timing of the storm coinciding with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, noting that school and business closures will aid in snow removal efforts.

Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan urged residents to adhere to alternate side parking regulations to facilitate efficient street plowing.

He assured the public that the city is prepared, with 40 pieces of equipment, over 2,000 tons of salt, and more than 20 Department of Public Works crews ready to respond.

Additionally, over 20 contractors with more than 1,000 pieces of equipment are on standby if further assistance is required.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Niagara, Northern Erie, Orleans, and Genesee counties from 1 p.m. Sunday until 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Wyoming, and Southern Erie counties are under the same warning from 7 a.m. Monday until 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Forecasts predict snowfall accumulations of 10 to 20 inches in areas where the heaviest bands develop, with locally higher amounts possible.

Travel conditions are expected to be challenging on Monday and Tuesday.

In addition to heavy snow, temperatures are projected to drop significantly, with wind chill values potentially reaching between 10 and 20 degrees below zero on Tuesday.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to exercise caution during this period of severe winter weather.
