Residents in Western New York Report Tremors from Ontario Quake |
Late Tuesday night, a magnitude 3.7 earthquake struck near Orillia, Ontario, approximately 60 miles north of Toronto.
The tremor occurred at 10:59 p.m. ET on January 27, 2026, with its epicenter 23 kilometers east-southeast of Orillia and about 99 kilometers north of Toronto.
According to Earthquakes Canada, the quake was lightly felt across southern Ontario, including areas as far west as Kitchener and as far south as Niagara Falls.
Notably, some residents in western New York also reported feeling the tremors.
In the Buffalo area, a Facebook user humorously attributed the shaking to the Buffalo Sabres' recent 7-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Another individual from Genesee County mentioned that the tremors caused their furniture to shake.
On X (formerly Twitter), a Canadian user remarked, "I thought it was a snow plow..." upon experiencing the quake.
Despite the widespread reports, there have been no accounts of damage or injuries resulting from the earthquake.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are uncommon in the region, making this event particularly noteworthy.
Residents are encouraged to report their experiences to local authorities to assist in monitoring seismic activity.
