Revitalized Transit Hub Enhances Access to Downtown Attractions |
The historic Delaware, Lackawanna and Western (DL&W) Terminal officially opened its doors to the public on Monday, marking a significant milestone in Buffalo's ongoing waterfront revitalization efforts.
Located directly behind the KeyBank Center on South Park Avenue, the restored terminal now serves as a modern transit hub, seamlessly connecting residents and visitors to the city's vibrant downtown areas, including Canalside and the Cobblestone District.
This ambitious restoration project, funded by both state and federal resources, has been in development for over a decade. Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the project's importance, stating, "We're writing Buffalo's comeback story, and it starts with tapping into the unlimited potential of our city, including parks, infrastructure, and amenities."
The newly inaugurated DL&W Metro Rail Station extends the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's (NFTA) light rail service beyond its previous terminus at Erie Canal Harbor Station, enhancing public access to some of the region's most popular attractions. This marks the first expansion of the light rail system since its inception in 1985.
In addition to the transit improvements, plans are underway to transform the terminal's second floor into a dynamic public space featuring a market, dining options, and entertainment venues. Darren Kempner, Director of Grants and Development for the NFTA, highlighted the vision: "Think of coming down to a Sabres game, or a concert at the arena, coming up to the second floor, accessing much of the facility, maybe enjoying a drink or some food before the event, and coming back for a concert after. Those types of things."
Construction on the second-floor enhancements is expected to commence in 2025, with completion anticipated within a few years. These developments underscore the commitment to revitalizing Buffalo's waterfront and providing residents and visitors with enhanced transportation options and community spaces. |
