Buffalo Zoo Welcomes Tupi, a New Male Giant Anteater |
Tupi joins the Buffalo Zoo's conservation efforts as part of a Species Survival Plan |
The Buffalo Zoo is excited to introduce Tupi, a 7-year-old male giant anteater who arrived from the Nashville Zoo on October 28.
Born on July 30, 2018, at Connecticutâs Beardsley Zoo, Tupi has now settled into his new home in Buffalo.
He resides in the M&T Bank Rainforest Falls exhibit, where visitors can observe his unique behaviors and adaptations.
As part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariumsâ Species Survival Plan, Tupi has been paired with the Zooâs resident female giant anteater, Maria.
This strategic pairing aims to support the long-term sustainability of the species, which is currently classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Giant anteaters are the largest of the four anteater species, measuring up to eight feet in length and weighing between 60 and 100 pounds.
They are known for their elongated snouts and two-foot-long tongues, which they use to consume up to 30,000 ants and termites daily.
Visitors are encouraged to visit the Buffalo Zoo to welcome Tupi and learn more about giant anteaters and the Zooâs ongoing conservation efforts.
For more information on Tupi and other exhibits, please visit the Buffalo Zooâs official website. |
