Buffalo Marathon races underway in NY for 25th anniversary, thousands compete

A Quarter-Century of Community Running Heritage

The Buffalo Marathon celebrated its 25th anniversary this past weekend, drawing approximately 7,500 runners from 49 states and 14 countries to downtown Buffalo, New York.

The event featured a series of races, including the full marathon, half marathon, 5K run and walk, and various family-friendly events.

Participants navigated a flat, fast course that showcased the city's waterfront, historic neighborhoods, and notable landmarks.

Co-Race Director Kim Fenter highlighted the event's growth, noting that participation has surged from 400 runners in 2001 to 7,500 this year.

She attributed this increase to the course's flat terrain and its status as a Boston Marathon qualifier.

The marathon's route took runners past scenic spots such as Hoyt Lake, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, and Delaware Park, offering a comprehensive tour of the city's architectural and natural beauty.

To accommodate the event, city officials implemented extensive road closures, transforming downtown into a vibrant festival zone.

Approximately 1,500 volunteers contributed to the weekend's success, providing support and fostering a strong sense of community.

Reflecting on the marathon's evolution, Fenter emphasized the importance of community engagement and the event's role in promoting health and fitness in Western New York.

As the Buffalo Marathon looks to the future, organizers aim to build on this legacy, continuing to attract runners worldwide and contribute positively to the local community.
