Marty Kretz's 'Pavement to Plates' initiative aims to combat food insecurity in Western New York |
Marty Kretz, owner of MBody Health and Fitness, is channeling his passion for fitness into a mission to alleviate hunger in Western New York.
On November 23, Kretz will undertake the 'Pavement to Plates' challenge, walking 100,000 stepsâapproximately 50 milesâto raise funds and awareness for FeedMore Western New York.
This organization provides meals and nutritional support to families across Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus counties.
"I got into what I do training-wise because I enjoy helping people," Kretz said.
"So this is just another way for me to do that...to get some attention for FeedMore Western New York and help them out."
His initiative comes at a critical time.
FeedMore WNY has reported a 46% increase in individuals seeking food assistance since 2021, with nearly 166,000 people served last year.
Additionally, the organization faces a significant challenge due to federal funding cuts, estimating a loss of over $3.5 million worth of food this year.
Collin Bishop, Chief Communication Officer for FeedMore WNY, emphasized the importance of community support.
"Right now we're seeing an increase in the number of people who need nutritional assistance across our four-county service area," Bishop said.
"The smallest thing makes a huge difference; it doesn't have to be a big donation. Everybody in our community has the ability to do something like this and make a huge difference."
Kretz has already raised more than $500 and hopes to increase that total before the event.
He's inviting others to get involved by donating, sharing information, or joining him for part of the walk.
Sponsors and participants will receive recognition, and there are incentives for donations, including T-shirts.
For those interested in supporting the 'Pavement to Plates' walk, opportunities to donate, sponsor, or participate are available.
As the community rallies behind Kretz's endeavor, his steps serve as a powerful reminder that individual actions can collectively lead to significant change.
In a time of growing need, initiatives like 'Pavement to Plates' highlight the impact of community-driven efforts in addressing food insecurity. |
