Bitter Cold Grips Western New York; Local Organizations Step Up |
Community groups provide essential services to protect vulnerable residents during Arctic blast |
Western New York is currently experiencing a severe cold snap, with temperatures plunging into the single digits.
For individuals lacking adequate winter resources, these frigid conditions pose a significant threat to health and safety.
In response, local organizations are intensifying efforts to support the community's most vulnerable members.
Friends of Night People, a dedicated nonprofit, continues to serve as a vital resource during these harsh winter months.
While not officially designated as a warming center, the organization offers a warm and welcoming environment during service hours.
They provide daily meals, serving approximately 150 individuals for breakfast and up to 300 for dinner.
Executive Director Joseph Heary emphasized their commitment, stating, "We just want everyone to be safe."
Heary also highlighted the importance of reaching out to those hesitant to seek help, noting that doing so could be life-saving.
In addition to meal services, Friends of Night People collaborates with the Code Blue Collaborative to provide shelter during extreme cold.
The Buffalo City Mission, located at 100 East Tupper Street, serves as the primary Code Blue overnight shelter.
It offers outreach, transportation, shelter, and warm meals to individuals experiencing homelessness when temperatures or wind chills drop to 32 degrees or below.
During daytime hours, when temperatures remain below freezing, the City Mission also operates a warming center from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Community members are encouraged to assist by donating essential items such as toiletries, waterproof gloves, cold-weather clothing, and footwear.
Donations can be dropped off at the Buffalo City Mission.
For those in need of shelter or assistance, calling 211 or texting 'CodeBlueBuffalo' to 898-211 provides information on available resources and alerts.
As the Arctic blast continues to impact the region, the collective efforts of these organizations play a crucial role in safeguarding the well-being of Western New York's residents. |
