Historic Buffalo institution reopens with significant upgrades after decades |
The African American Cultural Center in Buffalo has proudly announced the completion of Phase One of its extensive $1 million renovation project.
This marks the first major restoration of the 4,400-square-foot facility in decades, bringing the building back into safe and functional use for the community.
Renovations began in March 2025, addressing long-standing safety and functional challenges.
Key upgrades include a rebuilt dance chamber floor, new interior and exterior doors and windows to enhance security and accessibility, fully remodeled ADA-compliant restrooms, upgraded lobby and office areas, and essential electrical, plumbing, and drainage improvements.
These enhancements lay the foundation for future developments and expanded community programming.
Dr. Leah Angel Daniel, Executive Director of the Center, expressed her enthusiasm: "This first phase brings the Center back to life. For the first time in years, our doors open into a space thatâs safe, welcoming, and worthy of the community we serve. This work honors our legacy while preparing us for a stronger future, and Iâm grateful to everyone who helped us reach this moment."
Thembi Duncan, Board Chair, added: "The transformation of this building reflects our commitment to preserving a vital cultural institution. These renovations set the stage for deeper engagement, stronger programming, and a renewed sense of pride. Our board is energized, unified, and ready to carry this work forward!"
While the facility is now open to the public, operating hours may vary.
For the most current information, community members are encouraged to contact the Center directly at 716-884-2013 or via email at info@aaccbuffalo.org.
Founded in 1958 by Buffalo native Malcolm Erni, the African American Cultural Center has long served as a cultural and spiritual home for generations of Buffalonians.
From its renowned Paul Robeson Theatre and dynamic Kakilambe Dance and Drum Performance Company to its enrichment programs for youth and the beloved Pine Grill Jazz Reunion, the Center continues to uplift, educate, and inspire while fulfilling its mission to promote and preserve the history, art, and culture of the African Diaspora.
Looking ahead, Phase Two of the renovation project is set to commence in the spring, focusing on the Paul Robeson Theatre.
This next phase aims to further enhance the Center's facilities, ensuring it remains a vibrant hub for cultural expression and community engagement.
As the African American Cultural Center embarks on this new chapter, it stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of Buffalo's East Side community.
The successful completion of Phase One not only revitalizes a historic institution but also reaffirms the Center's commitment to serving as a beacon of African American heritage and culture for generations to come. |
