Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the commencement of a $34.6 million expansion project at the historic Shea's Buffalo Theatre, marking a significant investment in New York's cultural infrastructure.
The project features a four-story, 25,600-square-foot addition along the theatre's south side on Pearl Street. This expansion aims to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the theatre's historic charm.
Planned upgrades include a new box office, expanded lobby and event spaces, concessions on each level, additional restrooms, and critical accessibility features such as three new elevators.
Design elements by Carmina Wood Design will incorporate modern materials like limestone, stainless steel, and glass, alongside interior enhancements such as terrazzo flooring, crystal-inspired chandeliers, and flexible lounge seating.
Governor Hochul emphasized the theatre's importance, stating, "By investing in this iconic venue, we're investing in the future of Buffalo's cultural and economic vitality by supporting hundreds of jobs, area shops, and restaurants."
Shea's Performing Arts Center President and CEO Brian Higgins highlighted the project's long-term significance, noting that the expansion will ensure the theatre remains a welcoming, accessible, and inspiring space for generations to come.
The expansion coincides with the theatre's 100th anniversary and reflects broader efforts to strengthen cultural institutions as economic drivers. The venue currently attracts more than 350,000 visitors annually and plays a central role in Buffalo's Theatre District.
State agencies contributing to the funding include the New York Power Authority, New York State Council on the Arts, Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, and Empire State Development, highlighting a coordinated investment strategy in arts and economic development.
Construction is expected to continue through the end of 2027, with performances at the theatre continuing throughout the build. The project builds on recent upgrades across the campus, including improvements to Shea's 710 Theatre and infrastructure investments by the City of Buffalo.
By enhancing accessibility, increasing capacity, and modernizing amenities, the project is expected to strengthen Shea's role as both a cultural landmark and a key contributor to the regional economy.
As Shea's Buffalo Theatre enters its second century, the expansion represents a forward-looking investment in both heritage preservation and future growth. Officials say the project will not only elevate the audience experience but also reinforce Buffalo's position as a major cultural destination, ensuring the theatre continues to serve as a vibrant hub for arts, tourism, and community engagement for decades to come. |
