The 20th annual Paddles Up Niagara is set to take place on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island, New York. This free, family-friendly event offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty and ecological significance of the Niagara River.
Festivities begin at 7 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m., featuring a variety of activities for paddlers of all skill levels. The highlight of the day is the 'Fun Paddle' at 10:30 a.m., where participants can embark on a guided tour around Beaver Island and through its scenic lagoon. Whether you prefer a kayak, canoe, paddleboard, or any manually powered watercraft, all are welcome to join this immersive experience.
The event aims to foster a deeper connection with the Niagara River, a vital component of the Great Lakes system, which supplies approximately 20% of the world's freshwater. The river is not only a source of drinking water for about a million people across the U.S. and Canada but also supports a diverse array of wildlife, including numerous species of fish and birds.
Michelle Lockett, Community Engagement Director for the Niagara River Greenway, emphasizes the importance of this resource: "We want people to know about this great water resource we have. It's beautiful, it feeds so many wildlife, fish, and birds, and we drink it. It's really important. We need it to be clean so that we're all healthy."
Did you know that the Niagara River Corridor hosts more gull species along its 36 miles than the entire continent of Australia? This remarkable biodiversity underscores the ecological significance of the area.
Safety is a top priority at Paddles Up Niagara, with a dedicated team on hand throughout the event to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for all participants. Online registration opens on Monday, June 1, and closes at noon on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The first 200 registrants will receive special memorabilia items. To register and for more information, visit the Grand Island Recreation Department's website.
Please note that a park entrance fee of $7 applies after 9 a.m. Participants are encouraged to arrive early to avoid this fee and to make the most of the day's activities.
Join the community in celebrating two decades of paddling adventures and environmental stewardship at Paddles Up Niagara. Whether you're a seasoned paddler or new to the sport, this event promises a memorable day on the water. |
