The News, Eats & Events Shaping Western New York

A wounded U.S. Army veteran from Western New York is about to receive a specially adapted, mortgage-free home in Westfield, thanks to a surge of community spirit and hardworking volunteers.

A Soldier’s Journey Home, a national nonprofit, is rallying first responders, veterans, and tradespeople to complete the 4,000-square-foot build for Nathan Kalwicki and his wife, Veronica.

Kalwicki, who lost his leg and faced other serious injuries in a 2011 Afghanistan mission, said he’s deeply moved by the generosity surrounding the project.

Local support, including significant help from businesses and residents like Scott Beiler and TRS Heating & Air Conditioning, has fueled the rapid construction, aiming for completion in just two weeks.

Kalwicki, an accomplished musician, will celebrate with the community on May 30, as his band The Resilient performs at the home’s unveiling.

The Buffalo Music Series returns to Ralph Wilson Park starting July 6, bringing seven weeks of free, family-friendly concerts to the city.

Locals are invited to pack a picnic, bring their blankets and lawn chairs, and settle in for a rotating lineup of food trucks and local vendors.

The concerts create a vibrant space for neighbors to connect, celebrate community spirit, and enjoy the outdoors with live performances every Monday from July 6 to August 17, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Artists set to perform include Organ Fairchild & The Brass Machine, The Unity Band, Wendell Rivera, D’Mott, Lynn Drury & Jony James Blues Band, Will Holton & Drea d’Nur, and La Krema.

Events take place near the Centennial Pool and splash pad at 5 DAR Drive, in an open section of the park amid ongoing construction.

The series receives support from the Levitt Family Foundation, amplifying Buffalo’s cultural heartbeat through live, outdoor music.
